Five Questions with Hey Champ Print E-mail
Written by BARRY BRECHEISEN

If you call yourself an indie rocker and you don’t have Hey Champ in your music collection then shame on you. Think of The Shins and Grandaddy met with a little bit of Elliott Smith, add whirling keyboards to it and you have a taste of the poppy sound of the 3-piece that is Chicago’s Hey Champ.

Lumino Magazine is happy as mistletoe to have Hey Champ on our “Jingle Your Bells” bill and recently we had a chance to sit them down for Five Questions.

What is the band’s connection to Chicago?

Although we met as kids in Rockford, we all ended up in Chicago in different interpretive dance ensembles. So we decided to start a band because the interpretive dance scene here is pretty sketchy.

Describe your sound and name?

We’re indie pop with some electronic undertones, I suppose. Our name comes from the fact that everyone loves to be called a champ.

What can we expect from your live show?

Expect to be confused by the array of sounds, delighted at the hooks and harmonies, and awed by the drummer’s resemblance to a certain messiah.

What is your favorite Chicago venue?

Definitely the Empty Bottle, because it is probably the only venue in Chicago that consistently books great new music and for that reason it has a built in crowd of serious music lovers. And the stage is at an angle, so it feels less like a confrontation with the crowd.

Where do you hope to take the band in the future?

Slovakian myspace. Apparently it’s where über-hip bands are now discovered.

• Doors open at 6 pm. Tickets available online at www.AbbeyPub.com or at the door.
