In a lovely creation of fun zoo animals, from monkeys who long to throw poop to a lion who tries desperately not to eat his friends, “Madagascar” will keep you laughingly entertained. Not only is the humor scatological and the characters and voices a fun mix, but this movie intelligently spoofs your Hollywood favorites, from “American Beauty” to “Rushmore.”

Remember your favorite rose petals scene in “American Beauty”? Now picture an animated lion in the midst of steaks. It’s all in good fun. The cast of characters play brilliantly off one another. From the psychotic penguins to the adorable baby lemur, the characters are well placed. The four main characters are brilliantly played off of one another as well.

Art

Directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath
Written by Mark Burton and Billy Frolick
Starring Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith
Rated PG for mild language, crude humor and some thematic elements.
Ben Stiller performs the voice of Alex the Lion who loves the comforts and stardom of the Central Park Zoo, giving his friends kitschy memorabilia with himself on it. He is a pampered lion who longs for steak and a great main blow dried by the zoo staff.

Chris Rock does the voice for Marty the Zebra, who dreams of running free in the wild and is best friends with Alex.

Marty and Alex have two other friends that create a fun mix. There is Melman the hypochondriac Giraffe (voice by David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo with an attitude (voice by Jada Pincket Smith).

This foursome will keep you laughing non-stop as Melman longs to get back to his MRI, Alex discovers where steak really comes from, Gloria keeps a cool attitude, and Marty makes the most of his adventures.

The animation is fun and inspiring as these zoo animals learn to move less like humans in New York and more like animals from National Geographic. Ultimately, the kids will love the poop jokes and everyone else will love the spoofs of their favorite movies.
