Chicago's Best Late Night Mexican Food Print E-mail
Written by VINCE GIANDONATO

After a long night out, there is nothing quite like a big steaming plate of refried beans, nacho chips, and badass burrito to top it off. There's also nothing quite like the food of the Mexican people to prevent a bad hangover and replace it with indigestion. This is our salute to the five best places to score the spicy chow in our fair city during the wee hours.

El Presidente Restaurante 2558 N Ashland Ave (773) 525-7938 Open 24 Hours, 7 Days a week

Holy Guacamole! No matter what time your party ends, you can grab a great meal at El Presidente. Sit down or take out, this late night institution promises tasty treats for all. Split a couple of platter sized entrees for a bonanza of taste or try your old favorites, El Presidente does not let his people down. Try Mexican breakfast anytime for something different.

Picante Taqueria Mon-Wed 11am-12am Thu 11am-2am Fri-Sat 11am-5am Sun 11am-12am

Picante estas muy caliente! Seriously, this walkup joint has the best veggie burrito and phenomenal pico de gallo. Beware that there's not really any place to sit here, so this food was meant for walking. But it's late night hours make either Picante location a great stop for late night eats. I suggest the veggie burrito with both pinto and black beans, hot sauce inside. Try the Horchata, it might ease that heartburn.

Arturo's Tacos 2001 N. Western Ave., Chicago (773) 772-4944 Open 24 Hours

Whether you call it West Bucktown or Humboldt Park, I call it delicious. Arturo's is open 24 hours and caters to late night eaters. Great for a grub on the go or for sitting and recuperating with friends, Arturo's is a one stop shop.

El Famous Burrito 7047 N. Clark St (773) 465-0377

11 a.m.-1 a.m. Mon-Thurs 24 hours Friday-Sat 11 a.m.-Midnight Sun

I know lots of places lay claim to giant burritos, but El Famous is really, well... famous for its giant burritos. These things are seriously big enough to share. A close kept neighborhood secret, this hole in the wall dive makes for phenomenal eats, a great option for something quick to fill the void created by the drunk munchies. If you're daring try the fish tacos.

El Cid 2115 N. Milwaukee Ave (773) 252-4747 2645 N. Kedzie, Chicago (773) 395-0505 9 a.m.- Midnight Sun through Thurs 9-2 a.m. Fri and Sat

During the winter, El Cid still has great food, but in the summer this place comes alive. The patio is comfy place to hang out and drink margaritas. El Cid also has the elusive fish tacos and great chiles rellenos. Either location works, but Logan Square is my personal favorite.
