Young blues-rock artist Jonny Lang treated fans above age eighteen to a captivating performance on Saturday night at the House of Blues. Lang took the stage just after 10 p.m. and, in front of a sold-out crowd, opened the concert with “Long Time Coming,” the title track of his 2003 album. Of course tonight was also about the new songs off of Turn Around, released back in September.

Lang’s stage show was basic, with typical colored lighting and silky white drapes flowing at the back of the stage. His stage presence, however, told the audience that he was definitely into his music. Each note that Lang coaxed from his guitar was accompanied by a pained expression, each chord forcing more sweat from his brow. The audience was filled with fans, many of which seemed to be just as into the music as Lang. Swaying along with the sound, the hardcore fans didn’t seem to mind the overly long renditions of the songs, “Turn Around,” his second tune of the night, seeming to go on for almost ten minutes.
Despite Lang’s musical intensity, he still managed to have a personable relationship with the crowd, at one point asking the audience who it was that yelled to him from a car that morning. Several fans raised their hands. Lang talked to the audience between every song, enjoying the time he was on stage.
A bassist wearing a left-hand glove with a five-string bass, a keys player, drummer, and a second guitarist accompanied Lang’s set. The setting was intimate, and Lang definitely seemed to connect with his fans. His talent was apparent, his voice a smoky, at times androgynous, bluesy sound that suits his music well. Many people would be surprised to know that despite Lang’s dark blues, Southern sound he was born and raised in North Dakota.
Although the stage hand had to come out and adjust a Fender amp during a song, the concert went smoothly otherwise. Lang’s stage gear was simple, small amps needing mics of their own. There wasn’t anything flashy about the concert, but that’s part of why it was so charming. There are no doubts that Jonny Lang’s fans got what they came for. |
