It’s hard to pick out a highlight of this CD, because almost all of the songs are just that. Every track on Troubled Times has a beautiful melody and lyrics that actually speak. Written by Los Angeles-based artist AM, who grew up in New Orleans and attended Loyola University, the songs on the album were crafted with the encouragement of songwriter Gary Jules. Produced by Jamie Myerson (who has worked with Paul Oakenfold, Duncan Sheik, and Sneaker Pimps) this is artist AM’s first album.

On top of all that AM often performs at charitable events to help rebuild his hometown city of New Orleans.
The ten-track album is awash with sadness and loneliness and immediately the first track evokes a mood that is captured by all successive songs. “Troubled Times” is very catchy and involves some simple piano lines that add to the overall very basic guitar, bass, and drums instrumentation. “City Syndrome” and “Home” are also excellent in their long-soaring melodic lines and ability to be replayed by the mind. A few of the songs like “Wayside” and “Home” use electronic sounds that blend well into the background and don’t sound out of place in the slightest, but also add a sad undercurrent to the music.
A listener may find themselves waxing poetic about country landscapes, long summer drives, and possibly a cowboy or two while listening to this music. With an overall theme of sadness, this album won’t necessarily put you in a good mood, but the music will certainly insist you feel something. |
