Out on the road in support of the first Lemonheads record in nearly a decade, head lemon Evan Dando along with touring ‘heads Josh Lattanzi and John Kent fired through a fine selection of new material and some old favorites recently at Chicago’s Double Door.

Longtime fans braved the bitter, bitter cold to observe a slightly road-weary three-piece take the stage after a rambling set by the weird beard psych-rock band, Viet Nam. A few newer converts, expecting that former Descendants Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson, both of whom figure prominently on the new LP, would be in the touring line-up, shouted for musicians not in attendance much to Dando’s chagrin. “It’s the fucking Lemonheads,” the singer shot back, more a statement of purpose than a counter-attack.
From there on it was business. Newer, heavier cuts like “Become the Enemy” and “Black Gown” were interspersed with the classics “It’s a Shame about Ray” and “My Drug Buddy.” The evening’s many highlights included an inspired take on “Tenderfoot” from 1996’s often-overlooked Car Button Cloth LP, a solo acoustic read of “Why Do You Do This to Yourself,” from Dando’s 2003 Baby I’m Bored outing, and the propulsive, circa-now “No Backbone.” A country-tinged “Ride with Me” and the audience favorite “Great Big No” also stood out—testaments not only to the strength of the live band, but to Dando’s often undervalued strengths as a songwriter.
Called back on stage for two encores, which included the aural snapshot “Rudderless” and a thrilling “Rule of Three,” Dando and company ended the night triumphantly. Fans spilled out onto the city’s frozen streets, having witnessed The Lemonheads and their return to glory. |
Correction Written by Guest on 2006-12-21 04:15:57 The touring band this time around was not Josh & John, but consisted of Devon Ashley (drums) and Vess Ruhtenberg (bass). www.lemonheads.co.uk |
