What makes a great rock concert? Is it the mosh pit in the middle of the crowd? Or maybe it’s the interaction a band has with their audience? The answer to this big mystery is that there are many elements to making a great rock concert. It ranges from the way the stage is lit up to the lead singer taking off his shoes and launching them into the crowd.

For The All American Rejects, Dec. 19 at the Aragon Ballroom marked a band that could put all of these elements together to throw a show that will always be remembered – especially by their hardcore Chicago fans.
As we watched the concert from the mosh pit, we were enjoying ourselves so much that we forgot that we were there to write a review – now that’s what I call a good concert.
The All American Rejects prepared the stage with three lighted screens that flashed everything from various camera angels to random photos of the band or just things that they liked. It added an interactive feeling to the concert as a whole, making their audience understand a little of the band’s motivation and perspective while introducing the crowd to a bit of their back story.
Every rock show has a highlight moment – the one song or dance or move that will forever be engraved in the minds of the fans. For this show, a stage in the back of the audience was the setting for one song late in the set. And for once, the back of the audience was able to experience what it felt like to be up close and personal to the band members.
And at special venues, the scenery can add to the whole experience, as even the bands noticed the majestic scenery that the Aragon Ballroom has to offer. Throughout the whole Aragon Ballroom you have a sense of being in a fairy tail. You look to the side and you see castle turrets. You look right above you to see stars and galaxies, overall adding to the whole effect of the music. The perfect venue for the perfect band.
The concert wouldn’t have been so great without a great crescendo to the headliner. The openers consisting of Motion City Soundtrack, The Format, and Boys Like Girls, were able to get the crowd worked up every second that they were on stage. These bands have a similar vibe to The All American Rejects, and they all contributed to make this show perfect.
With songs like “Move Along” even amateur fans were given opportunities to sing along with the quickly growing Rejects, however, of course, the band also reached into its back pocket and played tunes unfamiliar to the crowd – which helped us become even bigger fans of the growing powerhouse band.
