Top Ten Movies of 2006 Print E-mail
Written by ALEX MECHLIN

From epics to indies, from foreign films to documentaries, it was an eclectic year for movies. Here is my top ten:

10)“Cache”
Makes the list for its pervading sense of dread, and one scene that was more surprising and horrifying then 99% of the horror movies released this year.

9)“The Illusionist ”
An old fashioned dream of a movie, with a charming performance by Paul Giametti and a forceful one by Edward Norton.

8)“49 Up”
The human power that has accumulated in this documentary series is incredible, as director Michael Apted goes back once again to check in with the hopes and dreams of 14 Brits. One of the best films to truly experience the passage of time, and the tolls and surprises it takes on people.

7)“V for Vendetta ”
A great fusion of 1984 and superhero comics, this action spectacle marked a return to form for the Wachowski Brothers after the Matrix sequels.

6)“Death of Mr. Lazarescu ”
Goes on too long, but while it does it explores the futility and carelessness that social systems can exhibit. The performances are as lifelike as it gets.

5)“Dave Chapelle’s Block Party ”
No movie this year had such sense of participatory fun. And the Fugees reunion was nostalgic and thrilling.

4)“Mutual Appreciation”
Not as good as “Funny Haha” (Andrew Bujalski’s first film), but still invigorated by off the cuff performances and sly observations. Also shot in messy but beautiful black and white.

3)“Half Nelson ”
Another one that goes on too long, but is able to make its points about the hypocrisy of the liberal dream effectively, mostly through Ryan Gosling’s intense performance.

2)“Brick ”
A perfectly crafted fantasy , and at the same time a deadly accurate portrait of certain aspects of high school life.

1)“The Departed”
Not as good as Scorsese's last movie, “The Aviator,” but it has so many enjoyable and chilling moments. Not just a gangster movie, it is a searing portrait of city in which everyone is playing both sides, even those supposed to be watching over us.

Honorable Mentions:“Borat,” “United 93,” “LOL,” “The Prestige,” “Inside Man,” “Four Eyed Monsters”

Worst of the Year::

“The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mission Impossible 3.” These are two movies that refused to have the fun that their worlds had so much potential for. Instead what we got was actors giving serious and impressive performances in plots that tried to be serious as well, but instead were ridiculous at every turn.
