Come in jeans and you’ll most likely be turned away from the door faster than you can get your ID out of you wallet, and don’t expect the rest of the people in line behind you to exactly feel sorry for you. Chances are they will be too busy admiring their own attire.
ATMOSPHERE
To say that Moda aims for the upscale feel would be an understatement. This two story nightclub is definitely polished décor-wise from the comfortable soft leather booths to the rich and well-coordinated color palette of reds, oranges, golds and purples. Moda’s signature accents are huge red leaves attached to the wall above the bar and across the room above the sitting area. Still, it is hard to escape the feeling that Moda’s stylish atmosphere is a little forced. The walls adorned with fashion-themed prints and the overhead monitors running clips from the runway shows are a bit much, and instead of adding, they take away from its potential coolness factor.
CROWD
The crowd is not as pretentious as you might expect, based on Moda’s reputation. Occasionally you might get an feeling that the girl (or a guy) standing few inches away from you is strategically hovering in order to get a glimpse of the maker’s tag inside of your top, but other than that the crowd is no different than the one you might encounter at any other nightspot in Downtown Chicago. It is mostly young, professional, good looking and, for the most part, still Midwestern enough to be approachable.
SPIRITS AND PRICES
Moda offers an extensive Martini list, impressive wine and champagne selection, as well as some signature concoctions with suitable names such as ‘The Runway’ and the ‘Raspberry Catwalk.” The drinks are pricey, but would you expect anything different from the place that features framed designer logos on its walls? Come on, we’ve already established this fact - the place has a snobby image to uphold here and affordability is not exactly a part of it.
ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENTS
If pop and R&B are your our music genres of choice, this nightclub will surely not disappoint. The playlist is geared towards everything that’s hot at the moment, so expect to hear a lot Britney, Beyonce and any other artist that happens to be currently in. Dancing is very common at Moda despite a lack of a dance floor, and on some nights the club also features live fashion shows.
WHY IT’S UNIQUE
I’m not sure if Moda deserves to be labeled as unique unless the classification is based upon the difficulty of getting in and the high prices. In that respect it certainly is special. Still, if you don’t mind forking a pretty significant amount of cash and want to feel like you’re a part of the Chicago’s elite crowd, Moda is a place to check out. Hurry up though, fashion world is very unpredictable, and Moda might become out of style before you know it.
