So it’s official, The Police announced that after 23 years they are reuniting for a world tour, At the intimate Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, the three-piece took the stage at their press conference dubbed The Police Rehearsals to play a few songs and make it all real. Thus proving the rumors to be true and just one day after their opening slot on the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.

Sting, who once responded to a possible reunion that one would have a good cause to certify him insane is apparently the one responsible for the whole crazy notion.

“I woke up one morning about three months ago and this light bulb went off in my head”, Sting told the crowd at the Whisky. “I'm going to call Andy and Stewart and tell them we should do a tour. I thought, well, it will surprise them. It will surprise the world, and it's surprising me too.”

These days, let's face it, everyone is getting back together, from Van Halen with Diamond Dave to even Rage Against the Machine for a one-off show. Yet, I have to say I’m really excited about seeing these three guys back together sharing a stage and anyone who saw the press conference on Monday could see there was something magical having Sting, Andy and Stewart back again making music.

This is also the 30th anniversary of the band’s first single, “Roxanne” which makes it more fitting that they not only played it for the Grammys, but closed the press conference with it as well. Along with “Roxanne” the band played, “Message in a Bottle”, “Voices Inside My Head/When the World is Running Down” and “Can’t Standing Losing You” at the press conference.

Sting joked before going into “Can’t Standing Losing You” about not knowing how the song ended or even how the middle of the song went for that matter. Before going into the medley of “Voices Inside My Head/When the World is Running Down” it appeared they weren’t entirely sure what song they were going to play. The conference was a very loose and light-hearted affair and appeared that Sting and the band were still learning the songs and still getting use to the whole idea themselves.

“In a lot of people’s minds we broke up too early,” Andy Summers said on a pre-taped segment.

It’s true that at the height of their stardom, Sting walked away to begin what became a very successful solo career. Still, it’s a shame it’s taken them so long to finally reunite.

During the Q&A, someone asked if they would consider playing Sting songs on tour. Fortunately they said it was just going to be just three guys on stage playing Police songs. Let these guys do what they do best and that is play the fuck out of their Reggae-laden rock songs. If you want to hear Sting songs where the hell have you been for the last couple of decades when he’s been on tour?

Speaking of, please please play The Police versions of The Police songs and not the VH1 adult contemporary versions. I can’t stress this enough. The biggest disappointment a few years back at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance was that it wasn’t The Police on stage it was Sting and his backing band. So let’s keep our fingers crossed and they find that chemistry they once had that produced some of the best music of the ’80s.

“It's very healing,” Sting revealed. “It's a part of my life I've sort of run away from for 25 years. We're still fighting. We're still arguing about the music. (But) we have ways of navigating now that we didn't have before.”

Let’s hope this vibe continues and the band doesn’t implode as one can suspect the Van Halen reunion will. Welcome back, guys.

The Police vs. Van Halen

I have always liked The Police but I have been an even BIGGER Van Halen freak. Van Halen this time around even though Dave is back has decided to leave out Michael Anthony.

He is the backbone of the band, has been there for all the tours, and makes Van Halen sound like Van Halen. Without him forget it I won't be going, and I have seen every tour since '83.

I like The Police's music I think I will go see them instead.
Can't wait

the Van Halen brothers and son have let their egos get to thier heads by not including Michael Anthony. The Police are going to suffer from Sting's vocals as he can't deliver the same way anymore, and when you think about it, his voice was a huge part of that Police sound.
