“Blue October is going to cut, and cut fucking deep,” said Q101’s Ryan Mano, just before the band took the stage. Although his statement may have been a bit dramatic, the audience reaction belied that Blue October did exactly as Mano promised.. Despite the freezing temperatures and blowing snow, Blue October managed sell out The Metro at the February 9th concert.

Opening the show with “You Made Me Smile,” the band grabbed the audience’s attention. Lead singer Justin Furstenfeld’s vocals started out slightly weak, but as the show progressed and his voice warmed up, the suit-wearing singer made it obvious that he was actually a well-built vocal powerhouse.

The audience as a whole seemed like a mass of Blue October fanatics, singing along with every song and high-fiving each other at favorite spots. Fans in the VIP section chose to stand, moving tables to give themselves more room. Playing through “Blue Sunshine,” “Razor Blade,” “Everlasting Friend,” and a string of other tunes, the band never lost their fans for even a second. Blue October performed a huge range of music. Their sounds were at times soft and slow, all the way to screaming and intense. The electric violin, not a very common instrument in main stream music, adds a very unique note to the band’s sound. Finishing their set with “Into the Ocean,” the band’s current hit song that has already reached VH1’s Top Twenty, Blue October left the stage, only to come back to perform not one but four encores, the last of which was their first big hit, “Hate Me.”

Blue October’s performance was very definitely crowd-pleasing and well-played. Their enormous range of styles will most likely garner the band a varying array of fans that is sure to grow in the coming years. Next time Blue October comes to Chicago, they will probably need a larger venue.
