Marc Maron’s style of humor is definitely not suited for everyone, as was evidenced by the amount of people that vacated his show prematurely. While the number of deserters wasn’t great, maybe four to six per show, it said something about Maron’s brand of comedy, namely that it is too intelligent and far too liberal for a good percentage of the population.

Those that stayed, however, were treated to hysterical laughter that involved only a minimal amount of dick jokes.
Maron’s jokes are very cerebral, often necessitating a good bit of mental gymnastics, and they can also be seemingly offensive if the listener doesn’t have the right attitude. Saying things like “At Christmas I like to dress like Jesus and go to the mall and say things like ‘No! This isn’t what I wanted at all…” Maron’s fans have to realize two things: 1) he himself is Jewish and 2) he really does look a lot like Jesus. Touching on topics like MySpace and iPods, religion, and even possum deaths, Maron’s choice of topics covered pretty much everything there is to cover. He somehow even managed to turn a sad little story of accidentally maiming a possum in his driveway into something that brought tears to the eyes of his audience, not because of sadness but due to the hysterical laughter the thought of him crying in front of a dying possum caused in everyone.
The humor of Marc Maron will light a fire under most any liberal, 9 to 5 hating, freedom of speech loving person out there. His views and opinions on human rights, religion, and even bipolar disorder are presented with a sincerity and honesty that it is difficult to not admire. Listening to him talk is like having a late night smoke session with your best buddy while getting everything you ever wanted to say about social injustice off of your chest. His humor can easily rub someone the wrong way, but only if that person is closed minded and unable to laugh at himself and everyone around him. Maron’s honesty is admirable and the way he presents it in a slightly self-deprecating way makes him lovable, as well. If the world had more Marc Marons in it, it would definitely be a far better place. Cheers to you, Mr. Maron, and thanks for the laughter. |
Kristapea Written by Guest on 2007-03-15 19:27:05 I didn't know I was doing mental gymnastics as I laughed my ass off every morning to Morning Sedition. | Melina Written by Guest on 2007-03-15 22:16:56 isn't it kind of condescending to say that "a good percentage of the population" is not intelligent enough to get Maron? Ive always found that his humor touches a wide array of people from kids to truck drivers, to construction workers, to professors, to politicians...His club show is, of course, a little different than his radio work, but it all recognizes the humanity in all of us and even when dipping into some depravity, is delivered with a level of care and humanity that is rare. Alot of his stuff might have roots in what is considered "intelligence" in this time of dumbing down of America, but its all actually common sense and human experience. If a few people left because they wanted the usual stand up bits, then I feel sorry for them because they missed a show that might make them think and feel a little. If you feel a little uncomfortable then it means that its working. Get out of the comfort zone and think a little...laugh alot!! This guy is a star! Heres to Maron!!... and I cant wait to see him perform in NYC in April!!...Im bringing my 13 yr old son, and he gets it! xoxo Melina |
