The oohlas, a four-piece including former Everclear drummer Greg Eklund who is now on lead guitar and vocals, have a sound that’s difficult to describe. While it sounds like a lot of things that came before it, at the same time it doesn’t sound like anything else.

Opening with “gone,” the album starts out fairly strong and then changes its sound almost entirely with the vocals handed over to a female singer starting on the second track, “tripped.” Peppy and oddly titled, “the cahuenga shuffle” definitely rings like Veruca Salt. The tenth track, “octopus,” is the first released single and video for this album, which seems to be gaining in popularity on youtube.com and is planned for addition to mtvU.
The arrangements are pretty interesting, but there isn’t a lot of change up between tracks. After awhile, the songs become somewhat hypnotic and it’s difficult to notice when the tracks have changed. Lyrically, there’s isn’t anything special going on here. The song titled “tv dinner” has nothing to do with a tv dinner and mentions sitting on the couch with someone “eating drugs.” Similarly, “show shoes” doesn’t mention shoes at all and ends with “I have no future here, my peach popsicle colored every.” Lyrics like these are just screaming “someone please like me!” and are somewhat off-putting because of their nonsensical nature.
Some may find the mid-‘90s alternative rock sound of this album interesting and while it’s worth a listen, it probably isn’t groundbreaking and will become a favored album of only a handful. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
