Listening to Mason Proper was a welcome change compared to much of the mainstream music on the market right now. Their style very experimental and they seem very unafraid to challenge the listener. That is something that I have always liked and respected in a band.

"There Is a Moth in Your Chest"
(Dovecote Records )
Released March 6, 2007

The first song on their new album “There is a moth in your chest” kicks off with an edgy yet soothing vibe reminiscent of The Shins or Frou Frou. The sounds pulsating through the track vary from what sounds like a twisted violin to rapid drum beats which carry the listener all over the sound spectrum.

As the album continues on the vibe changes gears many times. By track three “My My (Bad Fruit)” the sound becomes more intense and demanding with fast and heavy drums and fast guitars. “My My (Bad Fruit)” has the greatest potential to become a pop hit with its catchy rhythm and fast guitar.

Unlike some bands Mason Proper makes a point of being not all surface and many brings intelligent lyrics to the table. “Intimidation” feels like a lecture given by Tyler Durden in Fight Club. It is the shortest track on the album and the band seems to pull out of the song after it knows it has said what it needs to say. Nothing is wasted on this album.

Near the end of the album things slow down a bit but the obvious edgy tension is still obvious throughout each song. In “The World is Smaller Than You Think” the sound of guitar feedback radiates even in the background of the quiet moments on the track. This track also seems to contain the most varied amount of instruments on the album creating what the band calls a conscious electro-lullaby sound.

By “Mr. Charm” the band immediately changes any perception you might have made about them throughout the album so far. With fast starts and stops and creates a song not unlike something Beck or The President’s of The United States of America might make.

Mason Proper is unpredictable and wild, experimental and challenging. Without a doubt they are one of the most interesting bands I have come across in a long time. I would be curious to see the band perform in concert if only to see what kind of instruments they pull out of their bag of tricks. Let’s hope this is not the last we hear of Mason Proper.
