The Black Eyed Peas’ new album, “Monkey Business” is proof that this is the greatest band in hip-hop.

The Peas will be around for another 20 years if they keep this up; the only danger, of course, is when the group’s members decide they need to go solo. Don’t. Keep this as the group in hip-hop who really gets is: That good music, black or white, is about melody and beats. Not just beats, rappers; and not just melodies, pop-punkers.

So listen here, and buy this CD. There’s a reason why greats like James Brown and Sting beg to be guest stars on this album. It helps their careers. The Black Eyed Peas don’t need any help.

“Monkey Business’ is every bit as upbeat, punchy, and powerful as the Peas’ breakout, “Elephunk” which also was a near masterpiece. It has the awesome combo of rapping, singing, and melodic in-betweens. You can sing and dance to this stuff, and you can feel it’s yours no matter what race you are.

Look out for “Gone Going” and “Dum Diddly,” and don’t be fooled by their goofy names. These are sure hits if and when released. And, of course, “Don’t Phunk With My Heart” is already a groove sliding all over MTV and radio waves.

The only downside to the album is a few songs that ooze over female body parts. Lyrically, there’s nothing about “Ba Bump” and “Disco Club” that beats any run-of-the-mill ho-bumpin’ rapper. A little maturity could iron out those wrinkles next album.

But for now, the sheer distance between the Black Eyed Peas and every other hip-hop artist is incredibly vast. Enjoy it while this incredibly talented foursome are young, together, and at the top of their creative game.
