So summer is nearly upon us and although the weather doesn’t show it the music front tells us it’s already here. First up is one of the biggest buzz names out of London and no it’s not Lily Allen’s but her rival, the Motown inspired sound of the soulful Amy Winehouse.

If you haven’t heard of her do yourself a favor and go to iTunes and download “Back to Black”. With such a high demand they’ve actually moved her show from Schubas to The Vic Theater so if there are any tickets still available grab them while you can.

The following day you have two good shows with completely different vibes. Jet is bringing their classis rock sound to the HOB but if you are not into rocking than opt for the mellow atmospheric vibe of Air at the Rivieria Theater. You can’t go wrong on either of these shows in my book.

A few days later also at The Riv, the Arctic Monkeys are back touring on a new album trying to prove they aren’t just a one trick pony. You be the judge when they play on the 8th.

On the 10th you again have a decision to make. Is it worth traveling all the way to see The Killers at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates or head back to The Riv for Weiland, Slash and the boys of Velvet Revolver. I love The Killers but that’s just too far on a Thursday night so I’m voting for VR.

A few days later the Icelandic pixie Bjork is finally back on the road bringing her eclectic sound to the Auditorium Theater and speaking of the Auditorium if you missed Morrissey last year he’s back playing there on the 15th.

There are still others to consider like Keane, Arcade Fire, Clinic and Josh Stone to name just a few. So check your calendar and get off the couch for a nice month of live music.

Coming on CD we equally have a busy and exciting month. The preacher’s daughter, Tori Amos is back with “American Doll Posse” portraying five characters of womanhood. The reviews haven’t been very favorable to the piano playing beauty but there always seems to be a hidden gem or two on every album.

Dinosaur Jr. is back with the original line-up for the first time since 1988. This album has gotten a lot of good buzz (pun intended) and if the live shows last year is any indication it might be worth a listen. So go pick-up “Beyond” today and be washed in the wonderful world of beautiful noise.

Fresh off her headlining set at Day One of Coachella, everyone’s favorite little Icelandic pixie is back on the road with a new album and an eclectic wardrobe to boot. This is first in three years and it includes producing by Timbaland and a ten-piece female horn section.

Elliott Smith left us way too soon but fear not (much like Tupac) he’s back with a new double disc of rarities and demo’s entitled “New Moon. If you are unfamiliar with his melodic beauty than do yourself a favor and get acquainted.

If you consider yourself a fan of Britpop and don’t know of Travis where have you been? Okay they’re from Scotland but close enough. Fran and the boys are back to form with their first album in four years with the poppy catchy fun without the political mumble jumble.

The reviews have been mixed but Chicago’s own Wilco is back with either the most cohesive album of theirs in years or an album full of flat uninspiring tunes. It’s out on the fifteenth for you to make your own opinion.

Finally on the twenty ninth, Perry Farrell (along with his sexy wife Etty) is ready to unleash the revolving door of members known as, Satellite Party. A concept he debuted back in 2005 at Grant Park during Chicago’s first one weekend only Lollapalooza. The all-star lineup includes Peter Hook, Fergie, Flea and Frusciante, among others delivering “Ultra Payload”. If their performances at SXSW and Coachella are any indications this is going be a fun party worth attending.

So that just brushes the surface of May. This is a month full of musical possibilities. So cash your pay check and get ready for what’s going to be a wonderful musical summer.
