Chili is an artform with some food connoisseurs; they’ll tell you just how spicy it’s supposed to be, what ingredients are included in authentic chili, and that you’re a sellout for adding onions.

According to most of the definitions of “real chili” that I’ve heard, the chili at “Real Chili” didn’t quite match, but was still a distinct taste that hit the spot.

Real Chili isn’t a swanky place; the confines are similar to an old-school diner. The joint was established in 1931, so it’s quite possible that the décor just hasn’t changed since then. Either way, Real Chili screams of ancient tradition and legendary chili, which calls for mad respect for their 70+ years of slingin’ meat, noodles and beans to Milwaukeeans. Respect the chili.

The interior decorations are fitting, and patrons can choose between sitting at tables or the counter. Again, while this is no black-tie dinner, sometimes Real Chili will certainly hit the spot after a late night at work or those lazy Saturday afternoons when the snowdrifts make it difficult not to eat chili for three meals per day. Real Chili does carry-outs, so be sure to keep it in mind this winter when it’s freezing out, you don’t feel like cooking and Monday Night Football is about to kick off. (Or, to be fair to the non-football fans, fully chili-catered Thursday night OC parties.)

You’ve got a few options with your Real Chili special mixture. First, depending on how clear you want your nasal cavities to feel afterwards, you’ve got mild, medium and hot chili to choose from, with the option of onions, cheese and sour cream. (Crackers are on the house.) Chili comes with your choice of beans, noodles, both, or all-meat. Vegetarians can also request a meatless chili.

Size is your next decision. They’ve got three portions: chili for one, one-and-a-half, or two. Don’t let your eyes become larger than your stomach; the chili for one-and-a-half is really for one-and-a-half. The prices are reasonable from size to size, tallying up to about $5 for a quick and easy warm meal.

If for some reason you find yourself in Real Chili and just not in the mood for chili, never fear: Real Chili does serve non-chili items. Most of the menu is a variety of burgers and dogs, and you can even get those with chili if you want.
