If you were to ask the average person about racetracks they would conjure up images of deadbeats blowing their paychecks, obsessing over race after race. Now, grab them and head to Arlington Park this weekend and watch as their jaws drop. As the horses get prepped for the first post of the season in Arlington Heights, they are not the only event on the opening weekend roster.
For the diehard racing fan, this weekend marks the debut of synthetic track at Arlington. As dirt tracks fell further out of favor with the injury to last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, there has been a push to replace dirt ovals everywhere. The synthetic tracks are thought to be more accommodating to changing weather conditions as well as less abusive for the horses.
Wandering away from the track, live music and other entertainment options abound. Stop in Friday night to catch ’80s send-up Naked rocking all the tunes that you thought you had finally put behind you. Swing through Saturday to toss some money down on a Kentucky Derby trifecta then grab some BBQ and listen to Goin’ South. Sunday, well that’s family day; leave that one to the kiddies.
