Brand Upon the Brain! – May 18 – 20, call for times
Music Box Theater
3733 N. Southport Ave.
(773) 871-6607
$25 advance; $30 day of
If you attend this show between May 18th and 20th, you’ll be delighted to find a live 11-piece orchestra, a foley artist, live narration by Crispin Glover, and A CASTRATO. We’re not sure how they got a real live castrato or how they auditioned for that part, but whoever accepted it is definitely committed to his (is there a past tense for “his?”) art. Anyway, the movie is about a twelve-year-old Guy “as he spends his youth confined to an island orphanage presided over by his enigmatically malevolent mother and father.” How can you miss this spectacle?

Canine Film Festival – Friday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Level Chicago
1045 N. Rush St.
((312) 649-0347/ info@tailsinthecity.com
$35 advance/ $40 at the door

If you have a two-minute video of your dog, you can submit it in advance for judging by local celebrity judges. Unfortunately, the videos had to be in by May 11, but that doesn’t stop you from coming in and seeing who wins the best actor, actress, best action scene, etc. You’ll get to walk the red carpet, pose for photo ops, and get a little massage for your doggy. Get your tickets at Tails in the City boutique at 1 E. Delaware. Proceeds benefit the Anti-Cruelty Society.

1st Annual Beerfly Alleyfight! – Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery
1 E. Grand Ave.
$10

Beer drinkers (and I know you’re out there somewhere) can enjoy a small part of American Craft Beer Week (May 14 – 20) at the Rock Bottom Brewery. For $10, you’ll get food, home brew, and you’ll be witness to several performances, including dancer Minday Myers, Brent Roman (Mucca Pazza’s drummer), and others. Ten Home Brewers will be given a set of ingredients to make a brew, and they’ll have to pair it with a food, and one of the aforementioned artists will interpret the tastes in “an ass-kickin’, alleyfight way like you’ve never seen.” Pints of Rock Bottom beer can be had for $2.

Cher Birthday Celebration – Sunday, 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Kit Kat Lounge and Supper Club
3700 N. Halsted St.
(773) 525-1111

We know that all you closeted Cher fans are out there. And what better way to come out than to celebrate her birthday! There’s no cover and you can enjoy a Cher impersonator, and screenings of Cher’s videos and movies.
