ATMOSPHERE
This place is oozing the essence of Chicago. Tucked under the “El” tracks, a giant window celebrates that fact instead of hiding it away. Instead of the more traditional mirror behind the bar, this window fills that space nicely with hanging shelves of liquor in front of it. The giant bar serves as a focal point, with a “bar like” seating area behind it, something I’ve never seen anywhere else. This big open space is not all this joint has to offer, cozy nooks are to be had, as the bar gives way to a seating area, complete with wonderful booths. There’s definitely a sports vibe, as the walls are peppered with memorabilia and murals (A must see). Just try to figure out who everyone in the “Good, Bad, and Ugly” mural are, you’ll be there a while.
CROWD
There’s a fair share of people from the post work crowd, but on the weekends it tends to be packed with all types of beer aficionados. Either way, you can tell these are people that keep coming back.
ENTERTAINMENT
Well if one of the giant TV screens isn’t enough for you, pick up one of their trivia game units and interact with others in the bar, answering questions for points and glory, but mostly just the points.
SPIRITS
Aside from their top notch full service bar, they have an out of this world beer list (Well at least out of this country, but I hear they are looking to expand it soon). Craft Beers from all over the globe are offered, most for reasonable prices. Don’t be daunted by the selection, tell a barkeep what you like and take their suggestion, the bartenders are all very wise about the brews (and other stuff I’m sure).
GRUB
This is where the beauty of The Hop Haus comes through. You see, there are tons of bars that serve a million beers or more, and that’s grand. However, this Haus comes complete with amazing chow. You’d expect nothing less from the family that brought you Leona’s. Their appetizers are beautiful; I particularly loved the onion rings. Burgers and Sandwiches are the main fare, and they come as varied as the beers do. Pay special attention to the “Wildish” section where you’ll find Buffalo, Ostrich, Kangaroo and my favorite, Boar. This succulent piece of heaven is served up on a fresh roll and topped smoked bacon and cheddar. “Pseudo burgers” (Aka Sandwiches) are also available. The kicker here is that a lot of thought has gone into pairing each item with a suggested brew, and man have they done well. If you’ve never thought a beer could compliment the flavor of something so completely, then brother you ain’t livin’.
PRICES
Aside from what the neighborhood might lead you to believe, prices are incredibly reasonable. Of course, more exotic beers will cost more exotic prices, but that is your choice to make. Keep in mind though, the portions are insanely big, the chow runs around $8 - $15 each and your alcohol bill is generally going to be more than your food bills, but it’s all worth it. With regards to parking, they do have pay-valet service, I found it easy to find street parking if you’re willing to walk a block or two. In my opinion, you’ll need the walk to work off some of the food and beer.
WHY IT'S UNIQUE
The Hop Haus is a celebration of Beer, paired with amazing, yet simple foods. With prices that won’t strip you bare, an amazing, knowledgeable and friendly staff, you’ll want to keep coming back for more. A great place to bring like minded friends and family; and I almost forgot! Both the bar and the kitchen are open until 4AM!!!!
