Taking its name from the 1970 country rock album by (former Monkee) Mike Nesmith & the First National Band, The Loose Salute was formed by ex-Mojave 3 drummer Ian McCutcheon and vocalist Lisa Billson. The band first came to the public’s attention with a limited edition EP, Suck it up Buttercup, in 2004.

The debut LP, Tuned to Love, adds Peter Greenwood on guitar, Charlotte King on vocal harmonies and melodica and Al Forrester on piano and organ to complete a core band that is clearly in love with West Coast 60’s pop. Like kindred spirits Beachwood Sparks and The Essex Green, The Loose Salute looks toward The Beach Boys, The Mamas and Papas and The Monkees for inspiration.
Album opener “Death Club” distills the band’s principal influences into three sun baked minutes—Brian Wilson-worthy organ, gorgeous vocal harmonies and gently plucked banjo accent nostalgic lyrics and McCutcheon’s strong lead vocal. “Photographs and Tickets” follows suit by mixing trumpet and extra percussion with Billson’s breathless voice.
Other highlights include the bittersweet country soul of “Turn the Radio Up,” the swirling psych pop of “Ballad of the Dumb Angel,” the surf and pedal steel rave-up “Through the Stratosphere to the Bars” and the Monkees-indebted title track.
Given Tuned to Love’s spacey use of traditional instruments and an overall pastoral sound quality, it is easy to hear Nesmith’s cosmic country after a few listens. The influence of his earlier group, however, crashes through the speakers like a wave striking the shore. |
