What was started with the harmless, "March of the Penguins," a film
documenting the journeys of penguins, soon warped into "Happy Feet,"
yet another painfully long movie staring young cartoon penguins, has
concluded with the new animation "Surf's Up," a film documenting a
young penguin on his journey towards winning a surfing title. When
will the penguin craze end??

This story in particular beings with penguin surfer Cody (Shia
LaBeouf), a young teenager bound with dreams of becoming a surfing
champion. Through Cody's voyage, he meets chicken friend Joe (Jon
Heder) and idol Big Z (Jeff Bridges). The young talent (LaBeouf and
Heder) had previously shown through in their past films (A Guide to
Recognizing Your Saints and Napoleon Dynamite,) and seemed to be right
on target in becoming the strong-minded star surfer that LaBeouf was,
while Heder was flawless in transforming into the laid-back character
that was his character.
The story embarks on a journey through the world of surfing
competitions, weaving in and out the significance of friendship before
winning. The movie proves itself to be an improvement from the
previous animated penguin releases due to the lack of themes that
seemed to clutter the previous penguin releases. It also managed to
intertwine the action filled, intense surfing scenes sure to keep the
kids entertained with the reality of surfing and its challenges of
fighting through the everyday waves. The highlight for most surfing
fans was found in the cameos from surfing legends Kelly Slater and Sal
Masekela, who draw in the audience in merely by the mention of their
names.
Although "Surf's Up" vividly took its audience on a tale of dynamic
surfing competitions filled with almost too realistic animations,
Hollywood has yet to provide its audiences with the proper innovative
film that they have been asking for. Enough with the penguins already! |
Written by Guest on 2007-06-14 14:32:16 There have been a total of only 3 penguin movies in the past 2 years. Also, it takes about 4 years for an animated film to be produced. Surf's Up was in production while Happy Feet was in production. It's a coincidence. |
