It’s nice to know that the Empty Bottle has finally invested in the modern convenience known as air conditioning and boy did we need it on Thursday. In front of a packed crowd The Pipettes along with their 4-piece backing band, The Cassettes, hit the stage at 11:30 pm after two opening acts.

Brighton, England’s The Pipettes bring back the look and sound of Phil Spector and the classic girl groups of the 60’s like The Ronettes and The Supremes. The three polka-dot matching front-woman are as much fun to listen to as well as watch as they dance in synch to one choreographed number after the next.

RiotBecki, Rosay and Gwenno have a fun twist to the 60’s girl groups and bring a nice change of pace than the usual rock fare that comes to town on a daily basis. Tonight they quickly sung and danced their hearts out through 18 songs in an hour at the cramped club. They even managed to get some of the indie crowd to move their feet and bop around to their infectious tunes.

This is one of those acts you need to see in person to truly appreciate. From the opening song of “Don’t Forget Me” to encore favorites like “Dirty Minds” these girls had the crowd eating out of their hands. It’s nice to see a band can win over a crowd with personality, fun songs and not theatrical props and lighting in an overblown stage production. Of course there’s literally no room for it at the Empty Bottle any way.

Deep down The Pipettes are a modern indie pop group that may look and sound like the 60’s, yet sing smart tales that at first sound innocent but are in fact full of talk of one-night stands and sexuality.

The bottom line is as far as girl groups go, this is one you don’t have to be afraid to admit you like. They are fun, smart and down right sexy. So do yourself a favor and don’t miss them the next time they come to town and make sure you pick up their album “We Are the Pipettes.”

Earlier in the night Monster Bobby and Smooch opened up the evening. Monster Bobby had a very short set that created his sound by using loops and guitar and is also one of the principle songwriters with The Pipettes and their guitarist. His sound is more a conceptual and offbeat route that is at times interesting but is an acquired taste.

On the other hand, Smoosh was a band that must need parental permission to be in the club. The two-piece consisting of sisters put on a great performance and was the perfect warm-up for The Pipettes. I mentioned parental approval since the drummer is the oldest being the ripe age of fourteen and her sister on keyboards is only ten. One of the highlights of their set was when their sister, who looked to be eight, came out on bass to beef up the sound for Bloc Party’s “Modern Love.”

But do you mean 'Smoosh' when you say 'Smooch'? OR is there another Seattle-based sister group out there?
