The one-year birthday celebration of the Improv was marked by cake and Christopher Titus. The comedian played four days of shows at the comedy club, discussing his life and painful experiences in a funny and playful way.
Titus, shunning the traditional hand-held microphone for a less-used lapel-clipped model, opened the show discussing his divorce, noting that he filed for the unfortunate motion on June 06, of ’06. He went on to discuss his new relationship, his father, and various other topics from his own life. The comedian is known for taking painful times in his life and turning them into humorous anecdotes to amuse the masses. While the Saturday night late crowd wasn’t as large as may have been expected for someone of Titus’ stature, the crowd that did show up seemed pleased with the performance, though less rowdy than most Saturday night crowds tend to be.
Titus was able to connect with the audience, asking questions from certain members about their own lives and relationships. The audience responded well to his queries and he was able to immediately turn audience answers into brand new jokes. Sans the handheld mic, Titus was able to make the evening seem less like a comedy performance and more like a sit-down discussion with a best older brother. Not ever resorting to cheap jokes or stupid tricks, Titus’ comedy was of a more cerebral nature; he was able to make us feel sad, such as when he discussed his trip to meet a wounded Army Sergeant who lost his eyes in combat and then, just as everyone was visibly depressed by the story, turn it around, as he is known to do, and made everyone see the humor that he found in the situation.
The excellent show was followed up by a raffle of prizes and gift bags, including things like overnight stays at a local hotel and t-shirts autographed by Titus. There was cake served in the lobby (two kinds! And so tasty…) along with champagne, and although the comedian didn’t make an immediate appearance, he eventually wandered in, had a drink, and acquainted himself with audience members who had stuck around to enjoy the festivities.
Christopher Titus put on an overall excellent show that everyone in attendance seemed to enjoy. You can look for him in an upcoming ABC show called “Big Shots,” which premieres next season after “Grey’s Anatomy.Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
