And Then There Was Phil Collins Print E-mail

It’s very rare a band can survive the departure of a singer and even rarer to become even more successful. Yet that’s what happened back in 1975 when Peter Gabriel departed the band for a solo career and Phil Collins stepped out from the drum kit and took over lead vocals.

"Genesis 1976-1982"
(Rhino)
Released May 15, 2007

With that in mind, Rhino Records has released the first 5 studio albums with Collins on lead in a 6-CD/6-DVD Genesis box set, Genesis 1976-1982, as well as individually all remastered and expanded. The albums are Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering, And Then There Were Three, Duke and Abacab. This is a first in a series of three box sets that are going to showcase a total of 13 studio albums. Each studio album is presented as a two-disc set - a CD featuring a newly remixed version of the original studio album, and a DVD with bonus material including videos, photos and interviews with the band. The box set also includes a bonus disc of rare tracks and b-sides during that time period.

To be honest Peter Gabriel Genesis was never my thing. I’m just not a big "prog rock" fan and it wasn’t until Phil Collins took control that I am able to listen and actually enjoy Genesis. So this box set is perfect for me. Even with that said it took several albums before the Collins era figured out their new direction. So it’s really not until the last song on the 3rd album in this box set from 1978, And Then There Were Three, that I start to enjoy and appreciate Genesis. “Follow You Follow Me” is the hint to the next chapter and their first American radio hit.

After that the rest is history, the last two albums in this box set, Duke and Abacab, (which were their next two albums to be released) produced a string of hits including “Misunderstanding,“ “Turn It On Again,“ “Abacab,” “No Reply At All,” and “Man on the Corner.” This is the Genesis that shines in my eyes and the following self entitled album in 1983.

So if you are a fan of the Phil Collins Genesis era, then this is the first of 3 box sets you are going to want to invest in. The albums have never sounded or looked better and the wealth of bonus material is a must for any fan old and new.
