If your college experience was anything like mine, it could be easily summed up by hours of gaming accompanied by a dirty-thirty of whichever canned beer happened to be on sale at the time. So, when I heard of Cans boasting over thirty brews presented in shiny aluminum cylinders AND old-school gaming it was a no-brainer. Though, on the weekends it can be tough to get that valuable Pac-Man elbow room.

ATMOSPHERE

Think back to those fancier college bars you would hit up on weekends, not that “we have pitchers for a nickel on Wednesday” place. Two bar tops provide that much need beverage access on crowded nights. Other than that, don’t expect too much character here, just a solid classic brick and wood look.

CROWD

The clientele is not limited to lovers of PBR and Shlitz it’s a mix of the college and post-college bar crowd. Honestly, I was a bit surprised not to see any collars in the up position; must have been coming in for a landing.

ENTERTAINMENT / EVENTS

A pool table and video games seem out of place when you are jockeying for elbow room on a Saturday night. Catch it mid-week for some happy hour fare and they seem a bit more inviting. Live music happens once a year for Cans music fest, with such retro-geats as Tommy Tutone and Digital Underground set to help them celebrate their fifth year. Otherwise, DJ's spin the rest of the sound year round.

SPIRITS

While the namesake cans of beer could keep one occupied for a while, a fully stocked bar is available for your boozing pleasure.

GRUB

From burgers to wings, they cover the most important of the bar fare. Look a little deeper and you’ll find some wholesome fried goodies such as the Snickers bar and Twinkies, and lets face it, we can’t get enough Twinkie calories in our diets.

PRICES

While those cheap thirty pack days may be behind you, at $3 to $7 for varying sized cans its not going to take too big of a dent out of the wallet. Stop in for some grub and you can do it up right for less than $20 for a sammich, beer, and bit of fried goodness for dessert.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

Cans, it is not just a name it is a way of life. Few places offer such imported greats as Young’s Double Chocolate Stout and domestic brews like Hamms on the same menu. They also have the potential to become your neighborhood hangout with bar keeps quick to recognize their regulars. If you’re looking for and adult version of Saved By the Bell’s “The Max” you may just find it here.
