If you’re ever looking for a place to go, like really looking for a place to go, I suggest you check out The Wicker Park Tavern. Formerly the Borderline Tap, the inhabitants of this old space have replaced most it’s character with safe, plain, sterility. If you absolutely can’t get people to make a decision, this is a safe place to bring everybody.

Wicker Park Tavern
1958 W. North Ave.
Chicago, IL
(773) 278-5138
Hours: 1 p.m.-4 a.m. Sunday-Friday; 4 p.m.-5 a.m.Saturday

ATMOSPHERE

A Redwood/mahogany bar, leather couches, and an amber haze gives the allure of a cool place to hang out. While there are plenty of TV’s to watch, there are none above the bar, which makes the bar a nice conversation area, unless however, it is late on a Friday or Saturday night. In which case, moving and talking are generally not options. The décor is safe, plain, pottery barn, schmaltz that seems to work as the lowest common denominator for most people, generally garnering remarks like. “Oh this is nice or “This will work” upon entering. It could almost be the parlor from that frat house in Animal House, and I don’t mean the Deltas.

CROWD

The crowd seems somewhat diverse, ironically enough, I think it can’t help to be with the neighborhood being what it is. It seems that most people kind of end up there or were just walking by. There is an unusually large helping of fratty boys and girls, Lincoln Park spillover if you will.

ENTERTAINMENT / EVENTS

Lot’s of TV’s with ESPN glowing on their screens and a satellite jukebox provide all of the packaged entertainment there is to have. On the plus side, there are free peanuts….

SPIRITS

Cocktails are standard, and moderately priced between $4-8. Beers run around $4-6 generally, and they do have a fair selection. When asked about signature drinks, one bartender looked at me like I’d just pulled a rabbit out of my ass, so I had to try again on a different visit with a different barkeep. She was able to make me a delicious cocktail, the name of which, I forgot, and in all fairness, she probably just made up. So if you get the blank look, move on to another station if a tasty cocktail is what you seek.

GRUB

Standard pub grub is spruced up with some lighter items. Their Dollar Burger (with beverage purchase) is a daily special. The sammich itself is a microcosm of the bar in a way: Passable, but nothing to write home about.

PRICES

Prices run from fair to high, depending on what you get.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

I’m not sure it is, but they are trying, and so should I. Great big windows make for good people watching on the busy North, Damen, and Milwaukee intersection. It’s got good proximity to cabs and the Damen Blue line should you be coming or going. Be sure to check out the snazzy bathrooms, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that’s about all I’ve got.
