There was no shortage of excited onlookers when Ben Harper took the stage with the Innocent Criminals on a very warm Lollapalooza evening. Harper ran onto the stage and stood at the microphone waving and pandering to the crowd in a way that on anyone else may have seemed conceited but on Harper was nothing but charming.

Under a myriad of colorful and ever-changing lights, Harper sang his heart out. He wasn’t afraid to give up control of the stage and happily stepped back, allowing his bassist and then bongo player to both have a chance to show their stuff.
Harper’s music is difficult to describe; it’s an interesting mix of rock and R&B that can get pretty funky at times or can sink down into the lowest depths of sad and haunting melodies. Harper sang, played acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and he seemed to live happily in the worlds of all the instruments he choose to work with. His performance was clean but didn’t seem to be over-prepared. He managed to just go with the flow in a way that any musician could be envious of. Fans were completely enthralled and those that had enough room to move waved their arms in the air in praise of Harper and his band. The show finished up with a surprise appearance by Eddie Vedder, who lent his voice to Harper’s band for just a few minutes. All in all, an excellent performance. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
