LCD Soundsystem Needed Earlier Time Print E-mail

I honestly hate to admit this, especially since I really, really wanted to enjoy their set, especially since it was one of the first sets I have ever photographed, but I feel obliged to tell you the truth – LCD Soundsystem didn’t deserve the headlining spot for the MySpace stage on opening night.

MySpace Stage
Friday, Lollapalooza 2007
7:30 p.m. Read Lumino Magazine's Lollapalooza coverage all this week! Interviews, concert reviews and more are on their way!

In no way am I saying they are a bad band, in fact, I actually enjoyed the punk-funk sounds focused on highlighting songs from the band’s newest album “Sound of Silver”, but what I am saying is they should have played an earlier time – a time in which they were not labeled as the highlights of the MySpace stage on the first day.

Other MySpace bands, such as Slightly Stoopid and Blonde Redhead outperformed the New York-based band. LCD just lacked that special punch. It lacked that punch that could have provided a great path to Daft Punk closing out the day.

I was also tricked. The security at the stage instructed the photographers to tightly pack the front of the stage because, and I quote, “There will definitely be crowd surfing.” See, even the security figured this was going to be a big, big show.

When I think of MySpace – I think interactive. Again, while musically, the band was very talented, but as far interaction with the crowd – there was little, if any. I wanted a band that would wow me, and they didn’t. They just played song, after song – almost to the tune of an album. A live show needs to be foot stomping good. It needs to showcase a difference, or else it just really isn’t worth it to watch an hour, or two worth of music.

This will not be the last time I watch this band, though. I have not written them off. Had they been the 11 a.m. band, then they would have made for a great up-and-comer.
