Neither blonds nor redheads were found on the MySpace stage on the sunny afternoon of this first day of Lollapalooza. What we did have was a trio of musicians that created a sound that can barely be described, but to try would evoke the words “dreamy,” “ethereal,” and most definitely “original.”

Comprised of twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace along with Kazu Makino, Blond Redhead came together under a name that came from a song title by the band DNA.
Singing varied between the two guitarists who flanked the drummer while the Sears Tower was hazily displayed in the background. Although there wasn’t an enormous crowd that gathered for Blond Redhead, fans were plentiful enough and those that attended definitely enjoyed the show.
Makino often seemed lost in her singing, closing her eyes frequently and whipping her hair about almost violently in between words that slurred together in a distinctly original way.
For a trio sans bass (their bassist Maki Takahaski left the group in 1996), Blonde Redhead managed to produce a lush sound that was lacking in nothing. Their newest album, 23, was recently released under 4AD records. If you want to hear music that marches to its own drummer, check out Blonde Redhead. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
