Femi Kuti & The Positive Force - - Lollapalooza 2007 Print E-mail

At first the stage was empty. And then there was a guitarist. And then there was a full brass section. Then came three beautifully painted African dancers. Finally, Femi Kuti, dressed in bright yellow and black, came to the stage looking quite pleased to be there with his myriad of backup musicians. His style of music is very clearly and distinctly influenced by the Afro-beat music of his father, Fela Kuti, and it made for a terrifically interesting performance.

Read Lumino Magazine's Lollapalooza coverage all this week! Interviews, concert reviews and more are on their way!

I was intrigued from the very start, even though skeptical at first glance, as I didn’t know much about the band. But the beautifulness behind the set made me very satisfied to be seeing an actual gem on the Lollapalooza first day lineup.

There was plenty to watch and not one member of the audience could claim otherwise. The faint scent of Nag Champa incense permeated the stage area. The bright costumes were a spectacle unto themselves, and the dancers that stayed to the left of the stage were enthralling. They shimmied, twirled, and shook as their beautiful costumes danced with them, sweat from the hot day glinting on their skin.

Kuti’s intensity, on top of the dancers’ energy, made for a great performance. When Kuti picked up his saxophone, he was able to keep the audience’s attention just as well as when he was singing. His amazing circular breathing technique allowed him to sustain a note for what seemed like an eternity, his cheeks puffed out with his efforts.

Femi Kuti was a force on the stage and he was able to create and entertaining and provoking show.
