There was no need for L.A.-based Silversun Pickups to bring any heat with them from their native California. As they set up to play their 5:00 show at Lollapalooza’s smaller Citi stage, the sun was beating down hard upon their large band of loyal followers, but it didn’t deter them- or any curious onlookers- from sticking around for the energy-filled show.

The organizers of Lollapalooza clearly underestimated the appeal of the four-member group from the West coast who have been compared to early 90s acts like My Bloody Valentine and the Pixies. Although the band wasn’t booked on a main stage, the crowd swelled quickly, pouring over into the sidewalks and well out into the walkway beyond the area’s limits. Although much of the band’s hardcore fans remain in L.A., they seemed to have picked up some Midwestern followers- en masse- after touring with Snow Patrol and OkGo in early 2007.

Even the band itself seemed surprised at the size of the crowd. Lead singer Brian Aubert gave a shout-out to Blonde Redhead, who was playing at the myspace stage at the same time, and admonished to the crowd, “I can’t believe you’re over here listening to us instead of to them.”

But from the looks and reactions of the crowd, there was nowhere else they’d rather be. And the Silversun Pickups didn’t disappoint, by playing several songs from their critically lauded Carnavas, the band picked up the crowd enthusiasm and ran with it, especially on more popular songs such as “Lazy Eye” and “Little Lover’s So Polite.”

The band also got a chance to showcase their personalities between songs, as Aubert and bass player Nikki Monninger jokingly played an Abbot and Castello-style bit about which section of the audience deserved to have a song dedicated to them the most- those in the front who faithfully mouthed along to each lyric, or those in the back who were fighting against a sun so bright, they could barely see the show. And the audience was genuinely loving it- and them.

As the Q101 DJ insisted while introducing the Silversun Pickups- this was clearly the surprise act of the day not to be missed.
