Grand Piano, Large Crowd, But Spektor Misses Punch Print E-mail
Written by JORDAN BRANDES

Bad timing is one of the unfortunate downsides to of playing an all day event. At some point in the 12 hour long show one or two performers are going to have the bad luck of performing in front of an unresponsive crowd. Regina Spektor fit into that category. The expert pianist and songwriter performed in front of a packed audience that had, sadly enough just got their groove on with The Roots at the stage directly across from her venue. The moment The Roots finished Spektor took the stage and began to sing.

The Russian born Spektor has a genuinely beautiful singing voice that is even more distinct live then on her studio albums. But after hearing a band such as the Roots the adrenaline of the crowd had gone through the roof only to be brought down quickly by Spektor. It was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If she had just been scheduled to play earlier in the day side-by-side a mellower band her set would have gone perfectly.

A musician such as Spektor deserves her own time and place in order to give her the attention she deserves. Spektor herself seemed to be greatly enjoying herself and after every song dutifully thanked the audience for their appreciation. The appreciation was mutual on both sides of the stage today. It was a rather different site to see a crowd made up of mostly fans in their early to mid 20’s in awe of a musician playing just the piano. No matter how much the older generation may complain about how badly music has evolved there is no denying the classical influence of Spektor. She is a musician that has the ability to reach nearly every age group.

Many will be torn on this article, and diehard fans will dispute it for hours. There is no argument that Spektor is a musician on the rise, with each new album she releases (Spektor just put out her second album Begin To Hope a couple of months ago) her listenership grows. Spektor was just a victim of bad timing, no more.
