Daft Punk is used to being torched by music critics, and unfortunately, despite me giving them a perfect review they are going to get torched again – not because they put on a terrible set, but more so because of their place in the lineup.

I am not the first to write that I was very disappointed by the first day’s music lineup. I wanted more. While all three days had good bands, the closers were not strong enough. Daft Punk would have made the perfect opener to a big name closer – like the Pumpkins or even Chicago-breed Mr. West. But these guys didn’t deserve to close out day one of Lollapalooza 2007. In fact, I would much rather have seen Ben Harper perform the final slot on the AT&T stage -the biggest at the festival – especially since Mr. Eddie Vedder made a surprise appearance.
And again, Daft Punk is used to this type of critique. The two man Parisians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter changed their first band’s name from Darling to Daft Punk after a local critic ripped on them about it. However, these guys do have great music and put on an entertaining live show. With the success of “The New Wave” and “Da Funk” in the bag, Daft Punk has a great stage presence and solid tunes. Add in “Digital Love” and “One More Time” as their top hits and the stage is set.
But again, not for a Lollapalooza closing spot. A hot club like The Underground, sure, but Lollapalooza – one of the world’s supposed to be best festivals? Come on.
Much to the same tune of other Lolla bands, Daft Punk might have been battling band timing and scheduling. With an explosive set full of lights and props, Daft Punk may have been chosen to play the night set for visual reasons. I guess it was just a lose lose situation. |
well Written by Guest on 2007-08-10 12:04:24 in short...you're crazy. | one of few. Written by Guest on 2007-08-10 12:31:54 theres more to life than mtv. | Pearl Jam?! Written by Guest on 2007-08-10 16:15:39 What is a "real closer" besides a band that's been played to death on MTV? You never really explain that. I have seen most of the supposed closers you mentioned, and none of their shows came remotely close to DP in total audiovisual appeal. A true closer should offer something more than guys posing with instruments and some standard spotlights. Daft Punk is one of the only touring groups who offers something extraordinary. | Written by matthew s. on 2007-08-10 16:39:15 If I could put it candidly, even without the lights and spacesuits, I would have rather watched Daft Punk on a stage clipping their toenails than have to suffer through Muse, Ben Harper and/or Pearl Jam. I saw Daft Punk's set, and the only thing I thought it was missing was "Digital Love". That aside, it was easily one of the best performances I witnessed at Lollapalooza. And you know what, it doesn't matter anyway. After 5:15 p.m. Sunday, everyone else was just playing second fiddle to The Stooges, as expected. | Rock is dead. Written by Guest on 2007-08-11 02:14:01 WHAT!?! Daft Punk are gods on the international music scene and you suggest that Muse is better suited to headline... or wishing you had seen a semi-popular closer like Ben Harper instead!?! Are you insane!?! Daft Punk's set was by far and away the best set I've ever seen in my life... and I've been to probably over 100 shows. EVERYONE else I talked to at the festival also said DP should've closed the festival out. The second and third day were anti-climactic at best. Sorry to burst your bubble but Daft Punk has rendered the conventional band obsolete. That's the real story. | Written by Guest on 2007-08-11 15:59:57 you're completely fucking nuts | this is weak Written by Guest on 2007-08-12 23:07:41 You give no reason for your thesis. You take a view that flies in the face of reason (daring, but warranted - this *is* opinion) but you don't have the stones, the intelligence or the writing acumen to back it up. I can't believe they even let this piece of crap "review" onto the site. | Daft_Punk=DJing_Robots Written by Guest on 2007-08-17 16:52:18 Daft_Punk=DJing_Robots = MEH Not as good as in Coachella. Oh well, everything about it is just like in Coachella. People are fools for being blown by that show. |
