Watching Iggy and the Stooges perform is an experience somewhere in between a revival meeting and an exorcism. When Iggy Pop and The Stooges took the stage Sunday for the final day of Lollapolooza no one knew what to expect from the punk rock legend. Known for being a wildcard in everything he does Iggy burst on the stage dressed only in skintight blue jeans dancing and posing to no beat in particular. “We’re the Motherf-ing Stooges!” Pop screamed after busting out an intense version of 1969 early on into his show.

A single stage was not nearly big enough to hold the powerhouse that is Iggy and The Stooges. Pop climbed on everything from the stage rafters to the amplifiers, banging on the drums and making love to the equipment as he did. Pop puts his all into every single song he does, he is the original king of angst and rebelliousness. “I wanna do an ANIMAL SONG! I WANNA BE YOUR DOG!” he moaned loudly into the microphone and getting down on his knees panting. The song “I wanna be Your Dog” is one of those anthems that pumps up anyone within a mile radius of hearing it, The Stooges were taking now prisoners on Sunday. Every single person in the audience that day felt his energy and was moved by it.

Pop at his center is an everyman, and doesn’t believe in any of the celebrity status that comes with being a rock legend. Despite all the security about halfway through his set he invited the whole crowd to rush the stage and dance with him. This reviewer couldn’t pass up an opportunity such as that and jumped the divider between the stage and audience. It was a near riot from that point on, as those on stage joined Iggy for a rendition of “No Fun”. It was only a couple of minutes before the stage turned into a state of near chaos.

The lines between audience and performer had blurred completely at that point as the music literally engulfed you. Standing between the amplifiers the sound took over everything and those lucky enough to be on stage seemed to transcend into a new form of musical euphoria. “Give it up for the Lollapoloooza dancers! Thanks for being up here guys!” Pop thanked those on stage before escorting them off and back into the crowd.

Though nearly an hour had passed Pop refused to give up his thrown and continued his set well past his mark. The heat was daunting by that time for those not performing so it must have been even more intense for those on stage. Pop seemed to be going till he either passed out or the audience got bored with him. Drowning himself in water he strutted up to the microphone time after time giving it everything he had.

Watching Iggy and The Stooges was quite literally one of the best shows of the festival. Iggy Pop may be older then over half of the performers playing this weekend but you would never know it by watching him. All hail the king of punk.
