Taking the stage somewhat late, Amy Winehouse went to the microphone and stayed there. Her show wasn’t exactly flashy; she sang and when she wasn’t singing, she was smiling. Her beehive hairdo is slightly less of a mystery from close up; let’s just say, it isn’t all her real hair. The rest of her appearance was just as kitschy and at odds as usual. Her dress was a throwback to the 50s, but her tattooed arms and heavily applied eyeliner gave her appearance a serious juxtaposition, but when she opened her mouth to sing, her voice was completely classic.

Winehouse sang her radio hits about rehab and love and threw in some covers of a few oldies tunes. Her vocal stylings and lyrics are at odds oftentimes, as is her appearance, because while she’s singing in the smooth 50s and 60s era style, her lyrics are pretty edgy and often a bit explicit.
Winehouse is an amazing blend of old and new and she pulls it off pretty well. While she was standing quite still behind her microphone, she had a pair of backup dancers in white suits that managed to add life to her otherwise static performance and the backup band did a great job of supporting her silky voice.
Plenty of people were in attendance and photographers were fighting for position in the pit with restrictions against photographing her from center, thereby leading to some seriously one-sided photos. Photographic issues aside, Winehouse put on a very good, very classic show that allowed listeners to sit in the grass, relax, and enjoy on a hide, humid, and busy Lollapalooza day.
