Lumino Magazine was lucky enough to sit down with writer, director and actress Julie Delpy. A star of both French and American cinema Delpy is best known for her role beside Ethan Hawke in the 90’s romance Before Sunrise and its more recent sequel Before Sunset.
Delpy has been hard at work creating a film of her own, 2 Days in Paris. The film tells the story of Jack and Marion, a fairly well established couple just coming back from a long stay in Italy. Jack is an interior designer from America and Marion is a photographer from Paris. Before they return home to New York they decide to spend a few days in Paris visiting Marion’s old family and friends. This of course is not as simple as it sounds and many complications, both funny and serious, take place over the course of 48 hours.
For Delpy the task of completing her own picture was something she had wanted to do for quite awhile. “I had written my first script when I was 17 and did not write for a few years after that… till I did some of the writing for Before Sunrise” Delpy said “and it was well received, it was nice to see that my work was appreciated by people and it got me to write again.”
Though Delpy took on the responsibility of writing, directing and acting in the film she had some familiar faces helping out on the picture. Delpy was lucky enough to have her real mother and father play the parents in the film. “I wrote with them in mind for the part…I can’t imagine any one else could have done it as good.”
Despite many similarities between herself and the characters involved Delpy explains that the film itself is far from autobiographical. “It is not at all, but I played with it…I’m also not this aggressive woman that will punch people in the face” Delpy jokes “I would have dreamed to be this woman with tons of boyfriends but I’m not like I’m romantic and sweet but I love this idea of being a femme fatale…but with humor”
The film was shot on not only a tight budget but a tight schedule as well “I took it day by day, I didn’t take it as the whole thing every single day otherwise it can get overwhelming,” Delpy reflects “It was shot in 20 days; it was a lot of locations and a lot costume changes, a lot of different things to organize. It was quite complicated logistically it was hard to make in 20 days. We barely made it.”
At its core this film is really about relationships “I’ve become a specialist in relationships lately” Delpy laughs “I’m still trying to figure it all out. I believe in love and if there is love between two people it is pretty special, in this film it is an extreme example of dysfunctional love. But even if things are not perfect it is good to try and improve things.”
“I like the idea of forever after, I like the idea of growing old with someone” says Delpy “I think it is the excitement of the first few years of the rush, and then its like when that is gone and that goes away at time I feel that it’s very immature to not move forward…this film is a statement of maturity for me.”
Everything we do is a reflection of ourselves, to truly know someone you have experience something they have done. The film 2 Days in Paris is the result of years of hard work and collaboration on the part of Delpy and those close to her. Help support Delpy in her debut as writer and producer by checking out her film in theaters soon. |
