Despite what you might think you know about Moving Units from their opening gigs for Nine Inch Nails in 2006, their latest effort is a true force to be reckoned with if not feared.

“Hexes For Exes”
(Metropolis Records)
Released October 7, 2007

The Los Angeles trio’s sophomore effort is not only beautiful, but it borders on genius. You can sit and listen to stacks and stacks of records before you find a gem like this one, because let’s be honest, most of the music made today is just plain shit. Not so with Hexes For Exes.

Hexes For Exes contains all the elements of some of your favorite music, old and new. Tracks like “Paper Hearts” evokes the melodramatic swagger of Doves, while “Pink Thoughts” summons the early musical spirit of The Cure; pushing the limits of gloom rock with squealing guitars. “The Kids From Orange County” is a soft, yet danceable track that could easily be played alongside New Order at a 80’s night dance club, without a single hipster realizing that it in fact came from 2007. The true triumph though is the track “Crash ‘N’ Burn Victims.” Although Muse’s “Time Is Running Out” comes to mind upon first listen, it’s easy to find Moving Units a more convincing and satisfying outfit.

Hauntingly, the vocals are icing on the cake. Complimenting the bouncing styles that the rhythms create, the vocals on Hexes For Exes are a perfect marriage of meaning and inflection for the creepy danceable flow that appears on most of the tracks.

If Moving Units continues to make records like this, then other bands should begin cowering in their studios. Clocking in at just about 40 minutes in length, this is the record of 2007 that others should be compared to as the standard of excellence.

However here’s the rub, what might be the best album of 2007 won’t hit the stores until October. Sorry, you’re just going to have to wait. In the meantime, check out their 2004 debut, Dangerous Dreams to get a taste.
