First up are two festivals this Labor Day weekend, on Saturday you can jump on the highway and head to Tinley Park for the Projekt Revolution tour. This is the tour that Linkin Park started back in 2002 and this is the 4th go around for it. This time with Linkin Park you have Medina Lake, HIM and My Chemical Romance to name just a few. If that isn’t your thing you can head over to Charter One Pavilion for the Download Festival the following day. With the unlikely grouping of artists like The Shins, Snoop Dogg & Wolf Parade this is like a mini Lollapalooza and sounds like a better show in my book.

On The 6th you can hit the House of Blues for a dose of R&B with Macy Gray and The Brand New Heavies. I enjoyed The Brand New Heavies when I saw them a few years ago on their comeback from oblivion tour. They now have a new album that didn’t seem to go anywhere but still might be worth the time to check them out and it’s always fun to see how stoned Macy is.

The following day on the north side at the Aragon Ballroom you have the fun crazy hijinx of The Flaming Lips to check out. Expect confetti and a New Years Eve like party atmosphere. You can never go wrong with them and their show is a sure thing to turn any frown upside down!

You could also head over to the Hideout that night and go all alternative with the Bloc Party, The 1900’s and Chicago’s own, The Changes. This seems like a weird venue for these bands but good for the Hideout.

On the 8th the Canadian’s are taking over Tinley Park when Rush performs their classics and songs off of this year’s Snakes and Arrows album. They’ve never been my favorite but they are one of those bands much like Aerosmith and Kiss that have a solid fan base.

Speaking of Aerosmith, they are playing the Allstate Arena with Joan Jett on the 10th. Now I love seeing Aerosmith every time they come like the Rolling Stones but as much as they are one of those classic bands it’s rare that Stevie Wonder tours and he’s playing the same night at Charter One. I hear he’s playing all his classic like “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “Superstition” and “Higher Ground.” It can’t get much better than that.

After that if you’re still in a funky mood head over to the House of Blues on the 12th for a little P-Funk. George Clinton will be there to funk you up and is still worth seeing even though I wish Bootsy would go on the road with him just one more time. If you are out there listening Bootsy grab your guitar and come to Chicago.

Chicago’s own Rise Against takes over the Congress Theater to tear the roof off playing songs off of their latest critically acclaimed new album. So go out and pick up their new album, a pair of their VANS Vegan shoes (you read that right) and come out to support a local act.

Speaking of Chicago acts, Common brings along Joss Stone to play at the Charter One Pavilion. I have no idea who is the headliner here but get there on time to catch both acts. Joss has one of the best soulful voices coming out of a white girl or anyone for that matter and come on its Common. This guy is so cool he puts us all to shame. Common’s just one of those talents we are lucky to say he’s from our city.

If you missed Heaven and Hell the first time around never fear they are heading to the Sears Centre bringing along Alice Cooper for what’s gonna be a kick ass show of old school heavy metal music. This obviously isn’t the softer side of Sears it’s Dio and Alice what else do you need to make September complete??

Of course if you are more into the electronic sound then head to the Riviera Theater for a chance to get your groove on with The Chemical Brothers and Ladytron. This seems like a small venue for them but either way it’s my favorite venue in the city. The Chemical Brothers just released We Are The Night in July and has been said to be brilliant and their best since 1999’s Surrender.

The Beastie Boys round out the month with two unique shows at two different venues. If you were a fan of their recent release of instrumental music then you want to attend their show at the Riviera Theater. But if you are like me and just couldn’t get into it then wait till the following day and head over to Charter One where they are going to step up to the mic. Either show should be a unique experience and a lot of fun and who knows the Beasties may sing a couple tunes for their encore at the Riv.

Okay on the CD front it seems to be a bit quiet this month. On the 11th of September of all days you have Kanye West and 50 Cent both dropping their latest releases.

It’s been a rumor that 50 is going to retire after his 3rd release but either way this album is full of guests artists including Eminem, Timbaland, Akon, and even Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige and the sexy Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. No matter if you are a fan or not you can not argue the success he has achieved since his debut back in 2003.

Kanye’s Graduation is also his 3rd release and one can expect something groundbreaking that includes a track called “HomeComing” featuring vocals by Chris Martin of Coldplay. How can you go wrong with this guy? He’s got some of the best beats around and I suspect this album is going to be equally as great as his previous offerings.

On the 18th The Donnas are back with Bitchin’. The four girls from the Bay-Area exploded onto the charts back in 2002 with their female take of cock rock but their follow up in 2004 just fizzled. This new album is supposed to be a more straight rock album. It’s released on their Purple Feather label and I have my fingers crossed for these gals. They got the talent and the right attitude it’s just the lyrics that have been lacking in the past and the production on their last album just didn’t work for me.

Finally on the 25th you have a new Foo Fighters album entitled, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace. Not even sure what that means but Dave Grohl hasn’t released one bad album since he first created the Foos from the ashes of grunge. It’s still shocking how underutilized this guy was hiding behind the drum kit back in the Nirvana days.

So there you have it, a few new CDs to pick up and plenty of live music for you to catch before the weather takes an ugly turn and remind us we live in the Midwest.
