Brooklyn’s 311 has always been a group known for their unique mixture of reggae, punk, rap and rock. Their unique sound always brings back old fans and has created new fans every year. This time around adding in on the fun they have brought along Matisyahu for what they are calling the Unity Tour.

Charter One at Northerly Island

Matisyahu started his set late waiting until sundown to kick things off. In fact he had no choice since the Sabbath does not end until sundown on Saturday. So the Orthodox Jewish reggae singer had to have everyone wait patiently in order to respect his beliefs.

Once the sunset came Matisyahu hit the stage and owned the crowd shouting his signature reggae rap. Being a fan of Matisyahu early on, I enjoy his live shows and his “Live at Stubbs” CD gets a lot more play on my iPod then any of his studio recordings. Tonight he didn’t let me down and lived up to my expectations by proving his originality and overall talent. I mean how many reggae, beat-boxing, Orthodox Jews are out there?

Of course the group that really does “Come Original” was the main attraction for the evening. I’ve always heard you don’t fully appreciate 311 until you’ve seen them live. When you listen to their CD the listener is usually unaware of their passion that is put into making their songs creative. 311 has built up a fan base for over 10 years and like any other hardcore fans they go crazy when they hear songs from the early years.

Anyone who has seen a 311 show knows that one of the highlights is when the whole band joins together on center stage for the tribal drum jam. It’s a sight to be seen and heard and is always a fan favorite. Tonight another highlight of the show was when Matisyahu himself came out on stage to perform “Love Song” with Chad and the guys. Tonight in all, 311 delivered 21 songs including, “Freeze Time,” “Beautiful Disaster,” “Down,” “all Mixed Up,” and “feels SO Goof” to name just a few.

Overall, the night was perfect with the Chicago skyline only adding to a perfect night. So for those of you who have not seen this band live make it a point the next time they come in town to check them out.
