Let me set the mood for you dear reader; She Wants Revenge begins to play, a chill fills the air, and the hairs on the back of your neck begin to stand. This is the exact moment that you’ve succumb to the power of music. It might have happened the first time you heard The Cure. It might have happened the first time you heard Echo & The Bunnymen…or Depeche Mode, or the oft-referenced, Joy Division. Regardless why or when, it happened to you.

“This Is Forever”
(Flawless/Geffen Records)
Released October 9, 2007

“This Is Forever” is the sophomore effort from the duo known as She Wants Revenge. The duo is just as much an anomaly as the music; therefore it’s necessary to understand the past, to appreciate the future.

Justin Warfield, the vocally metronomic front man has existed in the musical space since his early 90’s successes with De La Soul producer/fifth member, Prince Paul. Unfortunately, commercial success didn’t follow in the genesis of the grunge movement. “Adam 12” Bravin, however, is best known for his production work with Esthero, among others. Together, since the release of their self-titled debut in early 2006, the duo has been compared and contrasted to such acts as Interpol and Editors, yet, the music stands all by itself.

The beats are simple. The lyrics are complex. The tension is thick; and the androgynous undertones are deliberate. Summed up, She Wants Revenge is an answer for the melancholy adolescents wandering the streets with confusion in their hearts thinking today is the end of their lives. This is the truest soundtrack to peoples’ lives.

Now, with that said, not only adolescents will be intrigued by the simplistic prowess of She Wants Revenge. Those who grew up with the aforementioned musical influences will be moved to action. Nostalgically recollecting the innocence of youth is the first act that comes to mind while spinning “This Is Forever.” Maybe it’s recalling the feeling of displacement in an awkward time, or possibly the existence of unrequited love, but all things considered, there was always a soundtrack that accompanied all of it. Today, the soundtrack consists of She Wants Revenge. Each listen tells a unique story, and each listener will take away an individual message, be it: confusion, love lost, imagination, sorrow, fear, etc. while set to pulsating beats.

The track “It’s Just Begun” bellows “someone’s gonna fall in love in here tonight,” and Mr. Warfield is correct…it’s us, all of us, dear listeners.
