In the last few seasons, Sarah Silverman seems to have really made a name for herself via Comedy Central. Her comedy show, “The Sarah Silverman Program,” has just released its first season DVD, complete with karaoke sing-along. Is it worth the purchase? Most likely.

Written by Sarah Silverman, Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab
Starring Sarah Silverman, Laura Silverman, Brian Posehn, Steve Agee and Jay Johnston

The best thing about this DVD is that it allows you to watch the show in chronological order without forgetting little tidbits that occur from show to show. For instance, Silverman has flashbacks in early episodes about things that don’t actually happen until the last episode. If you can remember them, the bit of foreshadowing makes it much funnier when you finally see the whole scene. It’s also really interesting to be able to try and find them in upcoming shows, like playing a game of Memory. The other perk of being able to watch the shows all together is that they get progressively funnier. The very first show, for instance, was not terribly funny, at least to me. However, as you go along, one begins to get used to Silverman’s antics and she also seems to tone them down ever so slightly to a more bearable level and the result is a few hilarious episodes. Keep in mind, watching them all together won’t take a huge time commitment; there are only six episodes that all fit on one DVD.

If you’re one of those people who gets a kick out of Silverman’s songs (which seem to appear in every episode), then you’ll appreciate the list of extra songs that are available in the “Extras” menu. There, you’ll also find a karaoke sing-along where you can sing with or without Silverman’s help. However, most of the songs are pretty short segments from the episdoes so you’re not going to get much of a karaoke thrill out of it. Comedy Central has also packed the DVD full of hard to get around previews at the start and even more shorts and previews in the main menu. It makes you wonder: if you’re paying for the Sarah Silverman show, should you really be subjected to quite so many commercials? Other than that, there are also two animated opening credits for the show that weren’t used and one animated story board that some fans of the show may appreciate.

The DVD isn’t terribly complicated and it’s not very long, but it does give a really great introduction to the show. Therefore, if you like jokes about queefing, AIDS, cough syrup, and sex with God, and you aren’t too mad about being subjected to Comedy Central’s mildly irritating ads, then by all means have no qualms about purchasing Season One of the Sarah Silverman Program. If you have some patience, it’ll be worth it.
