CSI: NY Makes Murder Fascinating Print E-mail

Who knew a show about a team of investigators who solve crimes purely through the science of forensic medicine would prove to be so popular. You can’t argue the success of the CSI franchise for CBS, just ask ABC. The Bruckheimer produced show was originally shopped to ABC networks back in the late 90’s who decided to pass on it. I wonder where that guy is these days?

Created by Ann Donahue, Carol Mendelsohn and Anthony E. Zuiker
Starring Gary Sinise, Melina Kanakaredes, Carmine Giovinazzo, Hill Harper, Eddie Cahill and Anna Belknap

In the fall of 2000, CBS included CSI as part of their fall schedule and it took off from there. Much like the Law & Order franchise, CBS successfully gambled and spun-off the idea first with CSI: Miami in 2002 and then they rolled the dice again in 2004 with CSI: NY.

I was very skeptical when I heard they were going to try it a third time but as they prepare to go into their fourth season, CSI: NY’s third season is coming to DVD with all 24 episodes and a few special features as well.

CSI: NY centers initially around the aftermath of September 11th and much like the Vegas CSI, has a more gritty feel to it then the pastels of the Miami version. It also has a bona fide movie star, with Gary Sinise as the lead investigator, Mac Taylor. I’ve always been a big fan of Sinise’s work so made it easy for me to like this incarnation.

It’s hard to believe or scary to think that every year all three shows can find that many different ways to present and solve a crime. Yet every season I can’t get enough of all three shows breaking it down and solving the crimes through science.

Through the years, the franchise has gotten better to probe more into the characters then just the crimes and has helped to maintain their audience. Season Three had a whole storyline on a serial killer brother who wants revenge, played by Edward Furlong. You may remember Furlong playing John Connor who was chased by the terminator in Terminator 2.

CSI: NY has four great featurettes to keep you occupied and gives you a behind the scenes look at some of the storylines and favorite episodes of this past season. One is entitled “Breaking The Killer Code,” is all on the storyline with the Edward Furlong character. Another is on the great episode with the Suicide Girls and on the episode entitled, “Silent Night”. The last one explores “The Body Farm” and is hosted by CSI: NY actor Hill Harper (Sheldon Hawkes) who walks us through the training facility that simulates crime scenes.

Also included in this set are four audio commentaries that are worth listening to on second viewings. I always love commentaries and wish they would do the whole season but I’ll take four. The only thing that is missing for me, are the outtakes and perhaps a blooper reel. Still, I really enjoyed the featurettes and they are well produced. So if watching CSI three times a week isn’t enough, never fear you can buy the soundtrack, play the game, or (over this past summer) gone to Chicago’s very own Museum of Science & Industry and try to solve a crime scene at an exhibit called – CSI: The Experience.

Of course you can also buy the season’s on DVD. So if you aren’t familiar with CSI: NY pick up the first three season’s and get ready for season four. Oh, and at the end of the month CSI: Miami is coming to DVD as well. You got a lot of CSI to watch so put on your latex gloves and get cracking.
