Bee Gees Greatest Is Disco-tastic Print E-mail
Written by STEVIE STYLES

Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb better known as the Bee Gees, were The Beatles of the disco era. Although they had been making albums since the mid 60’s, it wasn’t until a little movie called Saturday Night Fever came along that the boys made it to the big time. The movie soundtrack became the biggest seller of all time and the Bee Gees became part of a cultural phenomenon.

" Bee Gees Greatest "
(Reprise)
Released September 18, 2007

Originally as a double album, the Bee Gees Greatest was released back in 1979 and covered their most successful period of 1975-1979. This new expanded edition includes an extra 30 minutes of music with remixes, a 12” promo and two unreleased tracks.

This 2-disc set has almost every Bee Gees hit you can possible think of with all their tracks from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack including, “Jive Talking,” You Should Be Dancing,” and “Night Fever.” Along with the studio version there’s also a nice long version of “Stayin’ Alive.” A 12” promo version that keeps you dancing for two more plus minutes (with out feeling like a bloated extended mix) that includes a nice addition of well placed horns and strings.

Also included on this collection is the softer side of the Bee Gees with their more tender ballad side. Songs like “Too Much Heaven” and “How Deep Is Your Love” and the lesser known “Love So Right” might not get you in the mood to shake your booty but are equally important to their legacy. The Bee Gees knew how to harmonize and these songs showcase their voices beautifully.

Two unreleased tracks both from 1977 are also offered in this collection and were recorded when they were working on tracks for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. “(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away” appeared on the original released of this compliation and was first recorded and released by their brother Andy Gibb. It’s an interesting but throw away tune and wouldn’t have been missed it was ommitted this time around.

“Warm Ride,” on the other hand, feels like a track that easily could have been a single and makes one wonder why it has taken so long to surface. Instead of releasing it back then, they gave the track away to Graham Bonnet and Rare Earth to both release as singles in 1978.

I was first a bit apprehensive about these new remixes but they grew on me and are actually a lot of fun to hear how they have been reinterpreted. I still think they are used more for filler than anything but they are still fun. Of course I would have rather had tracks like “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” “Lonely Days” or “Run To Me” instead.

Regardless, if you are a fan of the 70’s or polyester this is perfect for you to listen to while spinning the disco ball. This solid collection proves the Bee Gees even today are staying alive and that’s no jive talking.

:grin In so many ways it's sad that so many only associate the Bee Gees with Fever, and I have always hoped that perhaps those who loved the music from the movie would take a listen to the earlier ( and later) Gibb music. In 1987, at a Black Tie Cancer Benefit, in Vero Beach Fla, I spoke to Barry about their newest LP " ESP ". I told him the sound was really different for them. He replied " It has to be." How sad that he felt they were branded "DISCO" and nothing more.
The entire Gibb family has always been incredibly kind to their fans, and we know the Bee Gees will never be the Bee Gees again, since the sudden, tragic death of Maurice. However, Barry has been working on a "country" flavored LP---keep your ears open for that--and while you wait, "You Should Be Dancin'" yeah!! :grin

The Bee Gees Greatest is a must-have even after 30 years. Nothing lifts you up like their music.

Light fuse, step back and let the music blow you away! :grin
