Shake Your Soul To Its Roots With Soulshake Express Print E-mail

Hope is out there for the fate of rock n’ roll. Listening to Soulshake Express is like tapping into the raw, primal emotion that made rock n’ roll music the phenomenon it was meant to be. Originally from Sweden the style of Soulshake Express is a fusion of the hard rocking riffs of Wolfmother, the experimentalism of the White Stripes and the cock rock of AC/DC. Just a little taste will get you hooked.

"EP"
(Beatville Records))
Released November 6, 2007

Track one of their self-titled EP kicks it off with a bang, or more literally a “Boom” being the first words uttered on the album. “Introducing T.S.E” is the kind of song that, if it had more lyrics, could easily be used for the opening title of an action television show. Short and sweet the band draws the listener in with the slow rattle of a far away train passing, then proceeds to fry their brains with some intense heavy rock. At a little over a minute it is by far the shortest song on the album but helps to define the bands style well.

Upon first opening the album one is reminded of the vintage days of rock n’ roll where each album was not only a testament to good music but also one that spoke to the audience as well. The inside cover is completely black with the words “play this record really loud…” in white centered on the page. The words are not just a helpful recommendation; this is the kind of sound that only works if it pulses through every bone in your body.

Many of the songs on the album have the makings of crowd-pleasing singles. While time will tell whether or not that prediction is true it will not be for the reasons you think. Instead of conforming to the pop formula that most rock/punk bands seem to be churning out today, Soulshake Express instead chooses to play extremely solid expertly made music. The guitar solos played on “Whiskey (and the blues)” are phenomenal and bring to mind some of The Doors heavier material.

The band itself has not made many waves in the U.S. market but that will inevitably change very soon. These guys are far too good to keep under the rug for very long. As much as their style is without a doubt heavy rock n’ roll, it is not as demanding as other bands such as Wolfmother that bombard you with noise. Soulshake Express captivates the listener without scaring them away.

Unfortunately for those of you who will inevitably become fans of the band it looks as if they are not scheduled to make any U.S. appearances in the near future.

There is real electricity felt when playing the Soulshake album, a feeling that is rarely felt anymore with modern rock bands. If Soulshake Express is given the chance they deserve, then be on the lookout for the band to create some major buzz in the States. Catch them now so you can truthfully say you were a fan before they were cool.
