"Scrubs" Grows Up in Sixth Season…Mostly Print E-mail

If you’re in the mood for Todd-fives, dong jokes, prat falls, double fricks, and a musical number about the benefits of poo-diagnosis, then the sixth season of Scrubs, much like the five before it, won’t let you down.

Scrubs: The Complete Sixth Season
Entertainment
Art
Special Features

Created by Bill Lawrence
Starring Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes

But in addition to the familiar crazy Scrubs-ish antics above, this season was one of marked growth for the doctors of Sacred Heart. Yes, there was the presence of Scooter DUI’s and Apple-tini jokes, but the characters in season six also faced the responsibilities of parenthood, relationships, personal loss and career choices.

In season six, the Turk family grew one member with the edition of little Izzie “Mocha Cub” Turk; Elliot left Sacred Heart for a private practice; Dr. Cox and Jordan welcomed Baby #2; Laverne passed tragically in a car accident; and J.D. coped with the aftermath of knocking up his girlfriend.

Although in recent seasons Scrubs has taken some flak for running low on originality, the sixth season thrives in focusing on the continual growth of its main characters and highlighting its third tier characters (Catch the episode “Their Story” to hear the voices of Ted, The Todd and Jordan).

While story lines of this season were heavy on personal growth and the burden of accepting (or not accepting) responsibility, Scrubs managed to remain the light-hearted, goofball comedy that’s carried on through six years. Plus, it turned out a musical. Score. (Ha, pun.)

The Scrubs Season Six DVD set has just arrived in stores, and additional features include:

  • A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the musical, including interviews with the cast members, choreographers, writers and the rest of the team that made Sacred Heart sing and dance.
  • Commentary on every single episode is available (although sometimes the commentary consists mainly of set directors and prop masters).
  • In-depth interview with Judy Reyes, who plays Carla
  • Alternate lines to jokes that were used, featuring a variety of improv riffs from Neil Flynn (an alumnus of ImprovOlympic and Second City), who plays the janitor, Zach Braff and others.
  • The always-welcome deleted scenes of hilarity

Catch up on Season Six while welcoming the seventh and final season of Scrubs that just started last week. So start tivo-ing, you have a lot of episodes to catch up.
