Clinch Delivers Pearl Jam On & Off the Stage Print E-mail

I’ve never been big on concert films. I’d rather listen to the audio version of the live show then actual sit down and watch it. Even big concert movies like the Talking Head’s Stop Making Sense have bored me and I am unable to sit still. Don’t get me wrong, I respect those films but it’s just not my thing. Maybe it’s because I’ve been to so many live shows through the years that the version on the little screen just doesn’t do it for me.

Pearl Jam - Immagine in Cornice: Picture in a Frame
Entertainment
Art
Special Features

Directed by Danny Clinch
Starring Pearl Jam
Studio: Rhino Records

So with that in mind, I was pleasantly surprised on how much I enjoyed Danny Clinch’s new Pearl Jam concert film, Immagine in Cornice. It capture’s Pearl Jam’s as they toured Italy last year and is an intimate look at the band on and off the stage. It covers all six shows everywhere from Milan, Torino, Verona and Pistoria and it is perhaps Pearl Jam’s Rattle & Hum.

Danny Clinch, better known as a still photographer, does a wonderful job capturing the live feeling of a Pearl Jam show. Whether you are a fan of the band or not, it’s hard to deny what a great show they put on. Touring off one of the best albums Pearl Jam has released in years, Clinch offers us wonderful little candid moments with the band along with glimpses of the culture surrounding them.

It’s an intoxicating 92 minutes that is worth the time of any Pearl Jam fan. The set list is well balanced with enough hits to satisfy the casual fan and the extra bonus tracks on and off stage makes this worthy for anyone’s collection.

Song List:

• Severed Hand (Milan)
• World Wide Suicide (Featured clips from all Italian show dates)
• Life Wasted (Torino)
• Corduroy (Verona)
• State of Love and Trust (Milan)
• Porch (Verona)
• Even Flow (Torino)
• Better Man (Verona)
• Alive (Milan)
• Blood (Verona)
• Comatose (Pistoia)
• Come Back (Pistoia)
• Rockin' in the Free World (Pistoia)

• A Quick One While He's Away — Eddie Vedder with My Morning Jacket (Torino)

Three and a Half Simply Not Enough

Hi Mr. Brecheisen,

I agree with your opinion on Danny Clinch's latest Immagine in Cornice. Although I'm a big fan of concert documentation, I was surprised by level of details on portraying a band like Pearl Jam with romantic Italy as background. Clinch was able to deliver a beautiful "postcard images" with his background on still photographing, exploiting any techniques familiar in photography. He used various method to frame a passionate connection between the band, the venue ang their fans. Mention it: reflection, framing, noise, sillhouette, juxtaposing, etc.

So, as a matter of cinematography and concert documentation as well, three and a half star wasn't enough to appreciate the works. It's way beyong than U2's Rattle and Hum.
