Tell me a little bit about your music. How would you describe its style?
Well, I like to think that I draw a lot of different styles into my music, like rock, blues and jazz, for instance. In the end, I want the music to be memorable and unique, so I don't try too hard to have a certain sound, just write songs that I feel are strong.
You put together a full length CD. How long did that take you?
I've actually put together two full CDs. The first took about three months and the latest one about a year.
How many musicians were involved in that?
On the most recent CD, my producer and I managed to round up about about 23 musicians.
Which instruments did you play yourself?
On this one, I played some piano and organ, bass on one track and guitar on all but one.
What was the process like getting that done? Like, organizing the musicians, finding funding, getting it recorded, etc.
The process isn't as complicated as it may seem, if you know the right people. That's the biggest thing. If you have connections with a studio, an engineer and great musicians, the recording is easy. The hard part after that is trying not to add too much or adding just enough, and of course being satisfied with what gets created. As for funding, well, I pay that myself.
How long did the entire process take, from conception to finished recording?
Some of the songs I wrote a few years ago, so officially you could say this album took many years, but since I write so many songs, I assume all of my albums will be like that.
Are you signed to a label yet?
No label yet, but I know it will happen some day...
Do you have any performances coming up?
I have a residency at Uncommon Ground on Wednesdays in December.
Tell me about your day job.
I work as the Programs Manager at Tree House Animal Foundation, which, founded in 1971, is the first cageless, no-kill cat shelter in Chicago and one of the first in the country. There I coordinate the volunteers and oversee the adoption of the cats, as well as the supervision of other various programs.
