Considering the film is based on a Disney theme park ride that fact is pretty surprising. Who would have imagined that a film originally designed as a gimmick to funnel more money into a classic ride could be so smart and inventive.
Released this Tuesday, “At World’s End” marks the final chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. This time around Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) must travel to Davy Jones’ Locker to save Jack Sparrow (the always delightfully insane Johnny Depp) from the land of the dead. Instead of going for a clear cut story line the filmmakers instead opted for creating a truly weird masterpiece.
Disney’s two-disc limited edition DVD includes just about everything fans of the movie ever wanted to know about the film both onset and off. For instance one of the special features gives the viewer an in-depth look at how the Maelstrom was created. Though it must have looked breathtaking on the big screen actually creating the scene was one of the biggest feats in motion picture history. Many of the cast and crew compare director Gore Verbinski to the famous Cecil B. DeMille for taking on such a production.
Other special features include a behind the scenes look at the famous cameo by Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards. Watching Richards let loose while still in full pirate costume is worth the price of the film alone. Little kids are likely too young to know who Richards is and will probably skip over it. If that is the case find some alone time and check it out; Richards is a true pirate at heart.
While this DVD is very comprehensive it is lacking commentary by the cast. Given the ensemble involved it is surprising that not one of the lead actors would be involved with the DVD. To be fair director Gore Verbinski provides an insightful and comprehensive commentary track over the entire film and the deleted scenes.
But as everyone who is a fan of the Pirate films knows without Depp the entire film would collapse. That is probably why Verbinski put so many Jack Sparrows in the movie. One of the funnier features on the DVD called “The Tale of Many Jacks” the viewer gets to see the many sides of Depp as he plays the insane Captain Jack Sparrow deep inside Davy Jones’ Locker.
Overall Disney really came through with a DVD good for children of all ages. The quality is perfect and the sound comes through amazing, it feels as if you are back in the theater watching it. If ever there was a perfect stocking stuffer this is it. So hoist the sails and set course for a great DVD adventure!
