My first impression upon listening to Brian Mazzaferri’s solo CD “All Roads Lead to Roads,” is that this is a musician who really knows what he’s doing. Mazzaferri’s music is heavy on well-played acoustic guitar and extremely pleasant vocals. The songs aren’t over-produced and have a live, natural feel to them. To be entirely honest, I wasn’t in the best of moods when I started listening and by the second track, I was sitting behind my laptop looking at the ceiling and dancing a little. (Go ahead, picture it).

Chicago locals may have seen Mazzaferri as the front man for Red Line District performing within the last year at venues like Double Door and The Beat Kitchen. Apparently, he decided it was time to strike out as a solo artist. I’m going to say he made a good call.
The CD opens with “All We Are,” which isn’t necessarily indicative of what’s to come on the rest of the album. It’s a bit country sounding, like something you’d hear in a feel-good movie and wasn’t really my own cup of tea, but it sort of reflects his background in musical theater. By “What Tomorrow Will Hold,” the second track, listeners should recognize that Mazzaferri is doing some pretty interesting things with melodies and lyrics.
His background in philosophy (part of his bachelor’s degree) comes through in his lyrics. “Artistotle said that man is wise so we should think, and ponder the skies, But Aristotle never saw your eyes of deepest brown…” is a line from “Silly Song,” which is filled with references about various great thinkers. The last track on the album, “About A Girl,” is a particularly sweet tune that makes us realize we are, in fact, listening to a song by saying things like, “Who says a love song means less than a song About how everyone lies?...But I won’t be afraid to tell the world This song’s about a girl.” I get the feeling that Mazzaferri is a bit of a romantic, but if that helps him produce music as sweet and pleasant as this, then more power to him.
Overall, “All Roads Lead to Roads” is a great effort filled with beautiful melodies and excellent musicianship. You can get the album from Sophic Records and at Brian Mazzaferri’s website at www.brianmazzaferri.com (make sure you spell it right… someone in the CD department gave him an extra ‘f” in his song labels).
